Blockchain intelligence firms have linked a recent, record-breaking cryptocurrency heist at Binance to hackers operating under the umbrella of North Korea. The cyberattack resulted in the theft of at least $6.3 billion in digital assets from the world's largest cryptocurrency exchange.
Security researchers and forensic firms have attributed the sophisticated breach to a specific North Korean cell known as TraderTraitor. The incident marks what is being called the largest known theft of cryptocurrency in history, forcing Binance to halt all deposits and withdrawals during the ongoing investigation.
How the Binance Hack Occurred
Binance stated in a post on X that the initial investigation suggested the attackers gained access to its network by compromising a laptop belonging to a Binance engineer. This access reportedly allowed the perpetrators to breach a service container and execute unauthorized withdrawal transactions.
While Binance maintains there is no evidence its private keys were leaked, the company has reported that industry partners have managed to freeze approximately $3 billion of the stolen funds across various blockchains. Binance confirmed it is actively working with law enforcement to trace and recover assets.
