Character.AI has initiated a voluntary Chapter 11 bankruptcy process to facilitate a court-supervised sale of the company, the AI companion platform announced in a post on its official blog dated October 12, 2026. The board said it reviewed all available alternatives before concluding that a supervised sale offers the best chance of maximizing value for stakeholders.
The company said it hopes the sale process produces an actionable bid that allows Character.AI to keep operating, but warned plainly that if no such bid arrives, the platform will be wound down. For now, the service remains online and all features are accessible, according to the company.
Character.AI bankruptcy: what the company says
In a FAQ published alongside the announcement, Character.AI attributed the filing to significant legal, regulatory, and operational headwinds it has faced over the past year. The company said it took meaningful steps to sustain the business before deciding that Chapter 11 was the best path forward.
On timing, Character.AI expects the court-supervised sale process to be complete by the end of November or perhaps early December 2026. Court filings and case information are being handled through a website administered by Stretto, Inc., the company's claims and noticing agent.
The company also addressed users directly: subscriptions remain active, billing is unchanged for now, and subscribers will be notified in advance if paid features are affected. Data privacy and security practices are unchanged, and users can still delete their accounts or export their data through the app or website.
