OpenAI is preparing to merge the Chat and Work tabs inside ChatGPT and to retire the older ChatGPT Classic desktop app, according to emails and in-app messages sent to users. The company says the combined experience will start with a small group of testers before a wider rollout.
The change follows months of complaints that the redesigned ChatGPT desktop app was confusing, with ChatGPT, Work and Codex competing for space in one window. OpenAI president Greg Brockman previously called the new interface "kind of a mess" and said the Work tab should disappear by the end of the year.
ChatGPT Chat and Work merger: what changes
In the email quoted by TechCrunch and 9to5Mac, OpenAI says the combined view lets users take an idea from exploration to execution in one place, bringing in files and plugins to build a website, create a presentation or act on the web while reviewing the work. Codex remains separate.
The bigger practical shift concerns limits. ChatGPT and Codex currently use different allowances, and OpenAI now plans a shared pool. The company says "most users won't need to wait for their usage to reset more often than they do today," while warning that advanced models and complex tasks consume more of the allowance. Unlimited Instant is not counted against it.
- Chat and Work become a single interface, tested first with a small group of users.
- Codex stays a separate experience in the ChatGPT desktop app.
- ChatGPT and Codex will draw tokens from the same usage pool instead of separate limits.
