A tampered version of the official Claude Code for VS Code extension was live on the Cursor Marketplace for roughly eleven hours, affecting up to 5,000 users, according to Cursor. The company says Anthropic had no involvement in developing the compromised build.
The malicious bundle, identified as version 2.1.313, tried to harvest developer machine data and set up remote access through an SSH backdoor. Security firm Phorion, which detected the compromise, says the payload runs as soon as the extension file loads, before any normal extension code executes.
What the backdoored Claude Code extension did
Phorion's analysis describes an injected immediately invoked function expression prepended to the minified extension.js bundle. It pulls in standard Node.js modules such as child_process, fs, os, path, http and crypto, and fires without any user interaction. The rest of the bundle looks like the normal extension, with the usual Claude Code and VS Code strings and activate and deactivate exports.
The payload creates a .ssh directory, appends an attacker-controlled Ed25519 public key to authorized_keys and sets restrictive permissions on both. From then on, anyone holding the matching private key could log in as that user, provided the SSH daemon is running. Cursor says the remote-access step likely failed on most machines because it requires administrator privileges.
