Google is expanding advertising inside its AI-powered Search experiences to international markets for the first time, moving AI Mode and AI Overviews ads beyond the United States. The company announced the shift on Wednesday during Alphabet's third-quarter earnings call, as reported by TechCrunch and Android Authority.
The decision lands at an awkward moment for the world's biggest search business. Alphabet reported $127.6 billion in quarterly revenue, up 25% year over year, yet Search advertising growth kept slowing and Alphabet shares fell 8% after the results. Google now needs its AI features to earn serious money, not just attract users.
Google AI Mode ads go global
Philipp Schindler, Google's chief business officer, told investors the company is "scaling high-quality ads within AI overviews in AI mode to more users and queries," including taking its monetization footprint global for the first time. The rollout also brings multi-turn ads and AI Mode itself to the United States.
Google says the early numbers look encouraging. Schindler said click-through rates for sponsored product listings in AI Mode are already comparable to organic listings, and that the company's user research shows people find the ads relevant. The push builds on Gemini-powered ad formats Google unveiled in May, including conversational discovery ads that answer users' questions and sponsored recommendations baked into AI-generated answers.
