Sony has cancelled the Android 17 update for the Xperia 10 VI, a software upgrade it had explicitly promised buyers when the phone launched. The company confirmed the decision in a notice on its website and issued an apology to users.
The Xperia 10 VI arrived in May 2024 running Android 14, and Sony pledged three Android OS upgrades for the device. Android 17 was the third and final one on that list. It will now never ship.
Sony's reason: storage limitations
According to Sony, a detailed technical assessment concluded that the Xperia 10 VI cannot deliver an Android 17 experience the company considers adequate. The stated cause is a limitation tied to the phone's storage configuration.
That explanation has raised eyebrows. GSMArena notes it had never heard such a justification from any brand before, while Notebookcheck calls the reasoning flimsy. Sony says the issue is specific to this model and will not affect other Xperia phones due to receive Android 17.
Xperia 10 VI specs and update timeline
The Xperia 10 VI is an upper-mid-range device, and its hardware is at the centre of the fallout. Sony's own wording suggests the 128GB configuration was the sticking point.
- Launched: May 2024 with Android 14 pre-installed
- Chipset: Snapdragon 6 Gen 1
- Memory: 8GB RAM, 128GB storage
