Microsoft opened preorders for the Surface Laptop Ultra, its new flagship Windows laptop built on Nvidia's Arm-based RTX Spark chip, at a keynote in San Francisco. The base model starts at $2,599 and shipments are expected to begin on October 16, according to Windows Central's Zac Bowden and The Verge.
The launch matters because it is the debut platform for RTX Spark, Nvidia's first entry into Arm-based PC processors. Both Microsoft and Nvidia are positioning these machines against high-end MacBook Pros, targeting creative work, gaming and on-device AI rather than everyday office tasks.
Surface Laptop Ultra specs and pricing
The $2,599 entry configuration pairs 24GB of RAM and 512GB of storage with the new Nvidia silicon. Reports differ on the exact CPU core count at that price: The Verge cites an 18-core CPU, while Windows Central describes an 8-core CPU. Microsoft has not clarified the discrepancy, so treat the core count with caution until official spec sheets are final.
The laptop comes with a 15-inch HDR touchscreen rated at up to 2,000 nits of peak brightness, plus a larger trackpad with haptic feedback. It also swaps the long-running proprietary Surface Connect port for magnetic USB-C charging, a MagSafe-style detail that stands out among the three USB-C ports on board.
