Tesla unveiled its next-generation Roadster in Waco, Texas, with a dramatic demonstration that included the car driving up a ramp, launching into the air, and performing a mid-air kickflip before landing using cold-gas thrusters. The event, described by Engadget as 'ridiculous(ly fun),' showcased a vehicle equipped with technology borrowed from SpaceX.
However, The Verge reports that the flying Roadster is 'just for show,' noting that the version with thrusters and suction fans will be invite-only and not approved for public road use. Tesla has opened reservations, but production is now slated for 2028, more than a decade after initial deposits were taken.
Tesla Roadster specs and pricing
The Roadster's 'Rocket' configuration, which performed the stunts, features a cold-gas thruster system derived from SpaceX technology. According to The Verge, it includes 600 liters of compressed air, 10 directional nozzles, and a 2G suction-fan system that allowed the car to hang upside-down on a ramp. This version can launch from 0 to 60 mph in under a second, but it sacrifices the passenger seat for gas tanks and is not street-legal.
Tesla has not announced a price for the production Roadster, but reservations are open: $5,000 to reserve, with an additional $45,000 due within 10 days for the base vehicle. The version with suction and thrusters requires a $250,000 reservation. The jumping and hovering version is invite-only. Tesla also downgraded the range estimate from 600 miles to 300 miles.
