AI is now dramatically accelerating AI research itself, according to a new analysis of a METR deep-access investigation conducted at Anthropic. Writing on the Planned Obsolescence newsletter, AI safety researcher Ajeya Cotra says the evidence indicates the company's "dramatic acceleration" threshold under its Responsible Scaling Policy has already been crossed.
The claim matters because of what it implies. If the acceleration compounds, Cotra notes, the naive extrapolation points to superintelligence within a year. The finding lands squarely in the middle of the current debate over how quickly frontier labs such as OpenAI and Anthropic are approaching transformative systems.
What the METR report found at Anthropic
According to Cotra's reading of the public METR report and Anthropic's policy documents, capabilities progress at the company between October 2025 and October 2026 ran about twice as fast as it had over the previous twelve months. The measurement used is an internal version of the Epoch Capabilities Index called AECI.
METR researchers also gathered a wide range of supporting evidence for the acceleration, but Cotra says most of that material was redacted. The report authors described the withheld evidence as "a majority of the evidence [they] found most informative."
- Capabilities progress at Anthropic roughly doubled in pace year over year, per the report.
- The metric cited is an internal version of the Epoch Capabilities Index, known as AECI.
- Much of the most informative supporting evidence was redacted from the public version.
