Apple opened preorders today for the HomeView, its first smart display, at $299. The 7-inch touchscreen device goes on sale Friday, November 13 in the United States, the UK, Canada, Australia, India and New Zealand, with Singapore following on October 15, according to GSMArena.
The HomeView is Apple's answer to the Amazon Echo Show: a tabletop hub that controls smart home devices, handles video calls and puts Siri's Apple Intelligence features in the middle of the living room. Ars Technica notes the display can recognize up to six household members and load their personal apps and widgets.

Apple's announcement puts the screen's brightness range at 0.3 to 500 nits, with automatic adjustment based on the room. The interface itself adapts to how close you stand, showing simpler information from across the room and richer detail as you step nearer, Apple said.
The standard model sits on a rounded aluminum base with a tilting stainless steel hinge and a downfiring woofer; the wall-mounted version is just the display and needs a separate mount. Schneider Home makes those mounts, which start at $60, and wall units come in only two colors, space gray and silver, versus four for the standard model.
