The new Apple TV 4K goes on sale November 13 at $299, the highest price Apple has ever asked for its streaming box. It brings an A19 chip, an improved Siri Remote and hands-free Siri controls, and it lands at a moment when buyers are watching big-tech hardware budgets very closely.
The question Engadget raises is simple and awkward: how long is that box supposed to last? Apple publishes no minimum support window for tvOS and makes no promise about how many years its streaming hardware will keep getting updates. That silence matters more than usual at $299.
Apple TV update history
The track record is the only real guide. Older Apple TVs received major software updates for eight to ten years, and security patches kept arriving after that, but nothing in Apple's documentation turns that into a commitment for the new model.
Apple has not said how many years of tvOS the 2026 Apple TV 4K should expect. Amazon, by contrast, writes a minimum support deadline for Fire TV devices. The comparison is not identical — a security update is not a full OS upgrade — but at least Fire TV owners get a number in writing.
- Apple TV HD (2015) and first-generation Apple TV 4K (2017): updated to tvOS 26 in 2025, plus security patches in tvOS 26.6 in July 2026
- That works out to roughly 10 years of major updates for the HD and eight for the original 4K
- September 2026: tvOS 27 drops both, with compatibility now starting at the second-generation Apple TV 4K from 2021
- Apple has not confirmed whether the older boxes will receive further security patches
