Four AI agents powered by Google's Gemini 4 Argon have beaten Minecraft without any human help, becoming the first team of agents to finish the game autonomously. According to Google DeepMind researchers, the agents spawned into a randomly generated survival world and killed the Ender Dragon, the game's final boss.
The run took 27 hours and 14 minutes. The agents were given no assigned roles, no strategy and no Minecraft-specific tools. They organised themselves, divided tasks, warned each other about threats and recovered gear from teammates who died — which happened 605 times. In total they wrote and executed 2,783 JavaScript programs and exchanged 229 chat messages.
How the Gemini 4 Argon Minecraft run worked
Each agent controlled a character through the open-source Mineflayer library and coordinated with the others through in-game chat and a shared memory of lessons and mistakes. A fifth agent, called the Observer, watched the session as an independent witness, checking for cheating and publishing live reports.
The team members settled into distinct jobs on their own. One made tools, another gathered food and supplies, a third lit a key portal, and a fourth built shelters for Endermen and landed the final blow on the dragon. Most of the 27 hours went into preparing for and fighting the Ender Dragon.
The run used 1.35 billion input tokens. Cost figures differ between reports: Engadget cites $810 at Gemini's list price or $1,620 at the standard price, while The Decoder puts the session at $1,620 at the standard Gemini 4 Argon price that takes effect in 2027.
