Meta and Microsoft are sharply reducing internal use of Anthropic's Claude, according to The Information, as the AI startup shifts from partner to competitor. At Meta, employees using Claude Code have dropped to roughly 30,000 from about 60,000 earlier this year. At Microsoft, the monthly per-employee AI budget in its cloud division was cut from $100,000 to about $10,000.
The pullback matters because Meta and Microsoft have been among Anthropic's biggest enterprise customers. Both companies are now steering staff toward their own tools and other models, which turns Anthropic's dependence on a few large clients into a strategic risk.
Claude use drops at Meta and Microsoft
At Microsoft, Claude spending had been projected at more than $1 billion annually, per The Information. Executives Scott Guthrie and Jay Parikh told employees to use in-house tools such as GitHub Copilot and OpenAI's models instead. Spending was cut by more than a third, with the monthly per-employee budget in the cloud division falling from $100,000 to about $10,000.
At Meta, the decline in Claude Code users is partly due to layoffs and partly because the company is pushing its own tools like Muse Code and MetaCode. In one 28-day stretch, Meta spent over $105 million on Claude Code alone, according to the report.
- Meta Claude Code users: about 60,000 to 30,000
- Microsoft cloud division AI budget: $100,000 to about $10,000 per employee per month
- Microsoft Claude spending projected at over $1 billion annually
