Meta is ending OS updates for the Quest 2 and Quest Pro by March 2027, according to an announcement from the company. The final system update for both headsets is planned as v213. After that, Meta says it will keep shipping security patches and critical bug fixes through the end of 2027.
The two headsets launched in 2020 and 2022, and both were discontinued in 2024. The move signals a clear shift: Meta now calls the Quest 3 and Quest 3S the baseline for its VR gamers, and says apps built for those headsets will carry forward to its upcoming VR Glasses.
Quest 2 and Quest Pro: what happens after March 2027
Developers can still submit apps that support the Quest 2 or Quest Pro through December 2027, Meta says. And the company says it will not remove cross-play multiplayer or block Quest 2 owners from playing, so existing games should keep working as long as they do not rely on new OS features introduced after March 2027.
That gives the Quest 2 just over seven years of total security updates since its 2020 debut, while the Quest Pro, which arrived in October 2022, gets roughly two years less. Meta says millions of people still play on both devices, and calls them the foundation of the platform.
Quest 3 becomes Meta's VR baseline
The Quest 3 ($599) and Quest 3S ($349) debuted in 2023 and 2024 respectively, and Meta is positioning them as the follow-ups to the Quest 2. According to 9to5Google, Meta says the newer headsets give apps more performance headroom and mixed reality built in, and software made for them will run on the upcoming Meta VR Glasses.
The Quest 2 remains the best-selling VR headset of all time, with around 20 million units sold over its lifetime. Its aging mobile chip is one reason Meta is winding down new feature development for it.
