Stablecoin payments reached $482 billion in the year through September 30, up 45% compared with the same period last year, according to analytics firm Allium. The figure was reported by CoinDesk and flagged by Techmeme.
The jump came as card spending surged and global payment companies kept adding crypto rails to their networks. Allium also counted 1.04 billion stablecoin transactions, a 71% increase year over year.
Stablecoin payments by the numbers
The headline stat is volume, but the detail is what stands out. Payments grew far faster than transaction counts, which in turn grew far faster than the supply of stablecoins in circulation.
Circulating supply expanded by just 0.4%, according to Allium. In plain terms, the same stock of tokens is moving around far more often, which points to real payment activity rather than new money being minted.
- $482 billion in stablecoin payments year to date through September 30
- 45% year-over-year growth in payment volume
- 1.04 billion transactions, up 71% year over year
- Circulating supply up only 0.4%
Why payment firms are adding crypto rails
Stablecoins are digital tokens designed to hold a steady value, usually pegged to the US dollar. That makes them easier to use for sending money than volatile cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin.
