Apple has released macOS 27.2 beta 3 to developers, and the update contains fresh references to touchscreen interactivity — the strongest hint yet that the company's first touchscreen MacBook Pro is nearing launch. According to findings reported by 9to5Mac and MacRumors, the beta includes gesture recognition tools for several built-in Apple apps.
The discovery matters because Apple is widely expected to unveil a touchscreen MacBook Pro as soon as this month, though Bloomberg has cautioned the release could slip to November. If accurate, it would mark the first Mac in Apple's history with a touchscreen display, a notable strategic reversal for a company that long resisted touch on the Mac.
Touchscreen MacBook Pro clues in macOS 27.2
The macOS 27.2 beta 3 code reportedly includes gesture recognition tools embedded in several stock Apple applications. The update also introduces a new long-press animation for Dock icons, which observers interpret as groundwork for touch-based navigation.
These changes are not isolated. Apple has been gradually reshaping macOS 27 for touch input over the past several betas. The software now supports pull-to-refresh for the first time, and Apple added touch input to Sidecar, the feature that lets users control a Mac with an iPad as a secondary display.
Bloomberg has previously reported that Apple is working to optimize macOS so that tapping a button or control dynamically surfaces relevant touch options. Similarly, tapping the menu bar automatically enlarges controls to make them easier to hit with a finger.
MacBook Ultra hardware rumors
Beyond the touchscreen, the new MacBook Pro is rumored to feature an OLED display and to be significantly lighter than current models. Apple may position the device under a new name — possibly MacBook Ultra — though no official branding has been confirmed.
The timing remains uncertain. 9to5Mac notes the launch could happen as soon as this month, while Bloomberg has warned of a possible slip to November. All of this remains unconfirmed by Apple, and the device has not been officially announced.
