Airbnb is building an AI travel agent and now says it will reach users in the first half of 2027, according to the company's Q3 2026 shareholder letter released Thursday. The announcement was first reported by The Verge, TechCrunch and Engadget.
The agent is not meant to be a general-purpose chatbot. Airbnb says it is designing an AI-native experience that builds a custom interface around each traveler's question, drawing on a library of travel-specific elements. CEO Brian Chesky has said for months that a plain chat window is the wrong way to plan a trip, and the letter now commits to a concrete launch window.
How Airbnb's AI travel agent works
Airbnb argues that today's AI agents handle simple, routine tasks well, such as booking a restaurant table or scheduling an appointment, but that planning a trip is a different problem. The company says its advantage comes from nearly 20 years of matching hosts and guests, plus its existing role inside real reservations.
Instead of replying in text, the agent assembles interface components in real time: maps, photos, comparisons, calendars and itineraries. Chesky described it on the earnings call as feeling "a little bit like generative UI," offering the right interface at the right moment.
The company also says the agent will work beyond the booking itself, helping guests change a reservation, resolve a payment issue, get a refund, rebook or reach 24-hour safety support. Over time, Airbnb wants it to cover an entire trip across homes, hotels, services and experiences.
