Google Labs, the tech giant's public incubator, launched an experimental AI-powered game-creation platform called Playground on Wednesday, according to TechCrunch. The tool lets users build browser-based games using simple text prompts, with no coding, design, or illustration skills required.
The launch places Google inside a fast-growing market of AI-assisted game development tools. It also extends Google's long-running interest in gaming, from the discontinued Stadia cloud service to the YouTube Playables hub of instantly playable web games.
How Google Playground works
Playground is designed for people who have an idea but not the technical background to build it. Creators pick a genre such as trivia or racing, or start from scratch, then describe the mechanics, gameplay and visual style they want in plain language.
The platform also accepts uploaded visuals that its AI turns into game assets matching the project's overall art style, so the look of a game stays consistent. Finished projects can be played on both mobile devices and computers.
- Genre selection: trivia, racing, or a project from scratch
- 2D or 3D, single-player or multiplayer
- Text prompts for mechanics, gameplay and visual style
- Uploaded visuals converted into game assets by AI
