Instagram announced on Monday that it is testing a new long-form video format called "Features," allowing creators to share horizontal videos up to 90 minutes long, according to TechCrunch, Engadget and 9to5Google. The move marks a sharp strategic shift for a platform that spent years betting on short, vertical Reels, and places Instagram directly in YouTube's territory.
Instagram head Adam Mosseri and VP of Product Tessa Lyons outlined the plan in a six-minute video. Mosseri admitted he had "been against doing long-form video on Instagram" for a long time, but said Lyons convinced him to try again. The test is expanding from Brazil to a small US trial, and 9to5Google notes the announcement video itself could not be viewed outside the US.
Instagram Features specs and rollout
Features are horizontal videos of up to 90 minutes, aimed at podcasters and comedians first. Engadget reports that only a few creators with individual deals with Meta can publish them for now, and that Instagram plans to help creators find brand partners if they lack existing advertiser relationships.
The rollout comes with supporting tools designed to tie short and long content together. TechCrunch says Instagram is also testing "Clips as Reels," which lets creators cut Reels from long videos, with the Reels linking viewers back to the full episode.
- Features: horizontal videos up to 90 minutes, in testing in Brazil and a small US test
- Clips as Reels: short clips cut from long videos that link back to the full video
- Series: connected episodic Reels, similar to TikTok playlists, now available in the TV app
