Putting a PlayStation 5 on a carpeted floor is one of the easiest ways to shorten your console's life. Engadget explains that, like any electronics, the PS5 needs to stay cool while playing, and carpet blocks the airflow its vents depend on. Dust, skin flakes and other particles trapped in carpet sit right next to those vents.
Sony's official guidance is not very detailed: both the downloadable PDF guide and the PlayStation Blog mention avoiding long-fiber carpet. That leaves owners guessing, especially because there are three PS5 models in circulation — the original, the Slim and the PS5 Pro — each with a slightly different vent layout.
What Sony actually says about PS5 placement
According to Engadget, the original PS5 has no vents on its vertical base, while the Slim and the PS5 Pro have small vents there and ship with rail stands for horizontal use. From that, it is reasonable to assume a Slim or Pro can lie horizontally on a short-pile carpet, and a first-gen PS5 with its base is fine standing vertically. Sony itself does not make that distinction clear.
Engadget's verdict is blunter: no PS5 should sit on short-pile or long-pile carpet. The problem is not only blocked air but everything hiding in the fibers. Carpet collects dust, spores, dead skin and bacteria, and your vent ports end up within an inch or two of all of it. Placing any console on the floor also invites kicks and stepped-on cables.
PS5 overheating signs you should not ignore
A loud fan is normal on a fan-cooled machine, Engadget notes, and it is not a reason to panic. The warning signs are different: crashes in the middle of a game, fans that never slow down, or an on-screen message saying your PS5 is hot. The console also has fail-safes and will shut itself down when temperatures get too high, both to protect its internals and to extend its lifespan.
If those things happen while your PS5 is on carpet, treat it as a signal. Once the console is off the floor, it likely also needs a routine cleaning and more breathing room. Engadget cites third-party repair shops such as Barrie Screen Repair, which report that first-gen consoles have had issues with liquid metal thermal paste displacement after long periods in the vertical position.
Where to put your PS5 instead
Engadget recommends a small table or an open TV stand, as long as there is plenty of room around the console. Sony suggests a minimum of 4 inches of clearance on each side. Squeezing the PS5 into a cubby like a book will not work, and if that is your only option, a small stand is better than returning the console to the carpet.
